Learning English with self-study websites

Many students learning English at IH London also spend time after class improving their language skills. This month, we're sharing some reviews of the best websites for self-study all written by teacher Caroline's Study Skills class.

Let's start with their guide to self-study resources from the BBC.

BBC Learning English website

BBC Learning English is a site dedicated to teaching English language on line. The site is for all people that want improve their English without traditional methods. There are a lot of positive aspects about this kind of self-study.

In fact people can develop skills in many sectors of English. There are a variety of exercises. The site offers four different areas: listening, speaking, writing and pronunciation. In my opinion the best area consists in the listening. The website contains lots of topics for listening. Basically, they consist of news about the world in specific arguments, for example about pollution, tourism, safety, eating, marketing, weather and social problems.

I think that by using this site you can improve your English. In fact when you listen to the news you can see also the words, so you may memorise new words and increase your vocabulary. In addition there are some exercises to practise the use of the words that you listened to, so it’s very useful.

Moreover, I strictly believe that the site is easy for someone to use. I will use this site to prepare for my next exam. However I think that it is not sufficient to have a good level of English. In my opinion the online method is a good way to improve your skills but the backbone of the study should be the traditional book.

After class, I usually use BBC Learning English website to improve my English ability. BBC Learning English is a website for foreign students who long to be good at English, like me.

There are many positive aspects on this website. Firstly, this website is operated by the BBC. It means the content is very new and has a good quality to read or listen. Secondly, this website has various kinds of content such as video clips, quizzes and a grammar & vocabulary section. And you can also watch recent news from the BBC. Lastly, you can use all the content in this website easily, because this website has quite a good user interface. Most of all, you can choose content depending on your level. That is, content in the webpage is so well-organized that you easily select proper content by your level.

On the other hand, there is one negative aspect too. You can get fed up with this website in spite of many kinds of content. That’s because the staff, who operate BBC learning English, have a tendency to prefer only contemporary reviews. If you aren’t interested with current events, you want to stop looking this website.

To sum up, I strongly recommend BBC learning English web site to you. In this site, you can improve general English abilities such as reading, listening and vocabulary. And you can also get some general knowledge about current issues.

The BBC Learning English website has a lot of purposes: information (news), games, learning English, search, TV… It could be used by people all around the world, UK and all others countries because it uses a lot of languages to help them.

They are a lot of positives aspects in this site. First of all it is universal and contains a large variety of information, tips and support. Furthermore it is reliable; the information in it is sure due to a very strict control.

On another side, the trouble with this site is the lack of inter-activity ; it is rather a “one way media”, so it is necessary to add it some other support. I used to go to BBC website to improve my English skill, but now I use it to get all kind of information which I can compare with my country’s news; there are some differences which are very useful for me. It opens my mind.

Two main things could be improve on this site, the inter-activity which is too weak, and the design which must be up dated. To summarise my opinion the BBC website meets not the whole part of my criteria, but seventy per cent of the criterions.

The BBC Food site is in order to cooking. It is run by the BBC. We can say that it is one of the most reliable sites in Britain. They use beautiful pictures and good explanations. It shows how long it will take to cook. This site is not only for housewife or women. Some recipes contain video that shows how to cook and tips for cooking. If you aren't familiar with cooking, the videos will be your good tutor. Moreover, watching these recipes on the video will give you some kind of joy.

Thousands of recipes are there. You can find various recipes using the recipe finder. For example, if you put the characters 'sc', you will find some recipes begins with 'sc', so you can find a recipe for scone immediately. It means you can find what you need easily without spelling the whole words. Furthermore, there are several recipes of scone by cookers, you can try some recipes and will find your favourite one. This site also contains lots of vegetarian recipes and 'Quick and easy' recipes.

On the other hand you will be hungry when you see the recipes. This is the only bad point of this site.

All in all cooking is essential skill for life for everybody. If you learn cooking in English, you can learn cooking and English both together. You will learn a lot of food vocabulary, verbs for cooking and the listening video will be good practice. People can learn well from what the person is interested in. You must eat something every day, so you must be interested in food anyway.
