Our Guide to IH London at IATEFL 2012

This week is the 46th Annual IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) Conference and Exhibition in Glasgow, Scotland. After the first morning of pre-conference events Twitter is already buzzing with reports from delegates about some fascinating sessions (search for #iatefl).

So far, we've been especially proud to see lots of praise for IH London teacher and trainer Chia Suan Chong who is part of the Business English Special Interest Group. We're looking forward to catching up with her about her research and presentation on 'English as a Lingua Franca – what should we be teaching?' after the conference.

With a whole week of TEFL talk to come, here's our guide to IH London at IATEFL

Come and wish us happy anniversary

This year International House London is celebrating 50 years of teacher training. In 1962 we introduced the world's first teacher training qualification for English language teaching (ELT) and in 2012 we are one of the largest ELT training centres in the world.

We will be at Stand 35 with International House World Organisation. Visit us to meet our team and find out about our teacher training department. If you trained with International House anywhere in the world then get a badge to wear with pride!

Celebrate with us

To kick off a year of anniversary celebrations, we are hosting an informal reception on Tuesday 20 March in the Forth Room from 18.30. If you're at the conference we'd love to see you there for a glass of wine and a chance to share some stories - just pick up an invitation at our stand.

Workshops and talks

On Wednesday 21 March, Richard Chinn and Marie Willoughby from IH London will be leading an interactive workshop on 'Making sense with metaphor in language teacher training'. Join them to examine the beliefs and insights of experienced trainers about this subject and to hear feedback from trainees. You could even learn some metaphors to take away and use in your own teaching!

Also on Wednesday, Danny Norrington-Davies will tell us 'Don't tell the police - they're not important'. His presentation looks at simple alternatives to using the passive.

On Friday 23 March, our very own Melissa Lamb and Catriona Johnson will be asking 'Up CELTA-creek without a paddle?'. Their talk looks at their research into newer CELTA trainers and what happens after their initial training support ends.

Also on Friday, Colin Paton and Dave Rea from IH London and Marie Therese Swabey will be talking about 'The CELTA Online - one year on'.
Along with a brief outline of the conception and development of the CambridgeCELTA Course Online, this talk will also include reflections from IH London about our experience of running the first two courses in 2011.

Find out more about these events and conference sessions throughout the week from the IATEFL 2012 conference programme or downloading the IATEFL conference app for your smartphone.

Don't miss a thing with Glasgow Online

If you're not able to attend yourself, this year you can keep up to date with IH London's sessions with the Glasgow Online Live Channel. Plus catch up with guest interviews, reports and all the plenary sessions as they happen during the conference.

International House Scholarship winners at IATEFL

The IH Trust has a Development Committee that aims to support language teaching and training in the UK and overseas for people who might otherwise not have access to such courses. This work includes our range of scholarships. This year, winners of The International House John Haycraft Classroom Exploration Scholarship will be speaking on Wedneday:
  • Ana Ines Salvi talks about 'Combining autonomy-oriented pedagogy and practitioner research via exploratory practice’
  • Sandy Millin will give a presentation about ‘Go online: encouraging your students to use internet resources’
And the winner of The International House Training & Development Scholarship, Blerta Mustafa, will talk about ‘Lessons learned from beginning teachers’ experiences: perspectives on teacher development’ on Thursday 22 March.

If you are interested in applying for a future IH Trust scholarship you can find full scholarship details on our website.

Let us know what you have planned for IATEL 2012! And remember to say hello to us at Stand 35.
